North by Northwest

In the northwestern corner of Spain white wines made with Albariño and Godello shine. Since the late 1990s, reds from the rediscovered Mencía grape joined them. Its old vines enticed star winemakers such as Alvaro Palacios, Mariano García and Raúl Pérez, who soon put on the world wine map the remote and mountainous Bierzo area and the scenic region of Ribeira Sacra along the Sil River.
