Memory Imprinted in Reels

The second day of Foundations of Mexican Independent Cinema focuses on the contemporary legacy of the Grupo Nuevo Cine generation, exploring how its experimental vision continues to shape today’s cinematic approaches to memory and documentary form.

This program proposes an intergenerational dialogue through two works that intertwine essay, documentary, and intimate reflection:
- A Way of Saying (2011), an essay short film by Mexican filmmaker Issa García Ascot, daughter of Jomi García Ascot, revisiting the traces left by that pioneering movement from a personal perspective.
- Back Home So Late (2025), by Spanish filmmaker Celia Viada Caso, winner of the Spanish First Prize in L’Alternativa Official at the 32 Festival de Cinema Independent de Barcelona, a film that delves into the relationships between memory, displacement, and the family archive.

Through these two lenses—one intimate and inherited, the other contemporary and transatlantic—Day 2 highlights how the spirit of Grupo Nuevo Cine continues to resonate with new generations of creators.

The screenings will be followed by a conversation with participating scholars and filmmakers, including Valerie Pires, Professor Breixo Viejo, Professor Richard Peña, Diego García Elío, Rodrigo García, Luis Juárez, Celia Viada Caso, Issa García Ascot, and Professor Ron Gregg.

This second day takes place at Instituto Cervantes New York, as part of a program cosponsored by Film and Media Studies, Columbia University Film Program, Hispanic Institute for Latin American and Iberian Cultures, Institute for Latin American Studies, Center for Mexico and Central America, The Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race (CSER), and El Equilibrista Editorial.
