Masters of Wine: Rioja, From Gran Reserva to Modern Styles

Rich, juicy, and immediately appealing, wines from Mediterranean climates are the newest, boldest and most different of all the world-class wines. Far from the Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rioja or Barolo models, these wines offer new styles and marked personalities. In Spain, the emergence of the modern Priorat wines three decades ago thrust into the spotlight a generation of talented winemakers who transformed the wines of Spain and made the first non-Tempranillo-based world-class reds. Their success energized the Mediterranean areas of Spain from Campo de Borja to Jumilla, recovering varieties like Garnacha, Monastrell and Bobal, and introducing others like Syrah. This seminar is devoted to these pioneering star wines and winemakers of Priorat and other Mediterranean wine areas.
