The Adventures of China Iron
The Instituto Cervantes in New York invites the public to take part in the second session of the Jorge Luis Borges Library Book Club, which will take place on February 10 at 6:00 p.m. and will be dedicated to The Adventures of China Iron, the acclaimed 2017 novel by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara. This work offers a radical reinterpretation of the Argentine classic Martín Fierro, giving voice and prominence to the character of La China, historically marginalized within gaucho literature. Through a journey that crosses the desert, a frontier fort, and a utopian Indigenous territory, the novel unfolds a literary exploration of freedom, identity, and emotional bonds, while also offering a renewed perspective on the foundational narratives of the Argentine nation. A finalist for the 2020 International Booker Prize and considered one of the best Latin American books of 2017 by international outlets, the novel stands out for its stylistic originality and its feminist, decolonial reading of the canon. This session will provide a space to collectively analyze this innovative literary proposal and to discuss the many symbolic, historical, and cultural layers that run through it.
