The long night. The Spanish Republican Exile in the United States
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and with that, the flight of almost half a million Spaniards from their homeland. Borrowing the title from one of the main mottos of Game of Thrones, Winter is Coming will reflect and shed light on the rich cultural and human contributions of those, particularly women, who were forced to go into exile. The war is over, and a long winter begins. This lively discussion—with first-hand testimonies from exiles and their descendants—will look at the many contributions that the exiles, and particularly women, made in NY. Testimonies: • Angela Giral, granddaughter of Prime Minister José Giral • Carmen Negrín, granddaughter of Prime Minister Juan Negrín • Paco de Onís, grandson of Prof. Federico de Onís
