Homage to Gabriela Mistral
On November 18, the Gabriela Mistral Foundation of New York and the Cervantes Institute will pay tribute to one of the most influential voices in Hispanic American literature: Gabriela Mistral. In this year, 2025, we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the historic awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to the Chilean poet—the first Latin American woman to receive such a prestigious honor. Gabriela Mistral was not only a poet of profound sensitivity and luminous language, but also an educator, diplomat, and tireless advocate for human rights. Her work—deeply rooted in love, motherhood, nature, and social justice—continues to resonate powerfully with readers around the world. This tribute seeks not only to remember her literary legacy, but also to celebrate her enduring relevance and influence on new generations of writers, educators, and dreamers. Through poetry readings, artistic interventions, and academic reflections, we will gather to honor her memory and renew our commitment to the values she embodied. As part of this tribute, a documentary will be screened about Gabriela Mistral’s visit to Sweden to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945. In addition, there will be a panel discussion around The Mistral Review, the bilingual magazine published by the Gabriela Mistral Foundation.
