CNIO Arte. Dialogues between Art and Science

CNIO Arte is an initiative of the CNIO (Spanish National Cancer Research Centre) with the support of the Cervantes Institute and the Fundación Banco Santander, that brings together leading international scientists and artists to explore common territories.
The project is based on a fundamental principle: that both science and art are essential for understanding the world. “For both science and art there are no insurmountable walls. Scientists and artists have always faced the dark unknown, and we have not been afraid to enter with an open mind, in order to learn and see further ahead,” affirms Maria A. Blasco, director of the CNIO. The first edition of CNIO Arte in 2018 featured the celebrated visual artist Eva Lootz and the pioneering scientist in molecular biology Margarita Salas; the second edition in 2019 brought together the photographer and internationally renowned conceptual artist Chema Madoz and the scientist Ignacio Cirac, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching (Germany) and expert in quantum computing. The third edition of CNIO Arte in 2020, featured the visual artist Carmen Calvo and the paleoanthropologist Juan Luis Arsuaga.
For the fourth edition, in 2021, the artist Daniel Canogar, author of high-impact works exhibited in almost every continent; met with Sarah Teichmann, the computational biologist from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (Cambridge, UK), and co-founder of the international Human Cell Atlas project. And finally, for the CNIO Arte 2022 edition, one of Spain’s most internationally renowned sculptors, Susana Solano participated with the epidemiologist Pedro Alonso, Director of the World Health Organizations (WHO) Global Malaria Program.
