Viridiana

Viridiana Iván Zulueta

Against her will and on the orders of the mother superior, Viridiana, a young novice about to become a servant of God, leaves the convent to visit her benefactor and only living relative, her uncle Jaime. Alerted that his niece will soon be definitively cloistered, Don Jaime, a widower fascinated by the resemblance the novice bears to his late wife, tries to seduce her. (Fragment of Imanol Zumalde, in Critical Anthology of Spanish Cinema, 1906-1995, Madrid, Cátedra / Filmoteca Española, 1997, p. 511). Winner of the Palme d'Or in Cannes, an article published in L'Osservatore Romano, which accused her of blasphemy and sacrilegious, led to the immediate dismissal of the Director-General of Cinematography and the ban on the film. It was not released in Spain until 1977.
