In our increasingly globalized world, cultural competence and language skills enable translators and interpreters to navigate the complexities of intercultural communication between India and Spanish-speaking countries. The concept of culture is as complex and dynamic as that of translation and interpretation. The translator and interpreter are not satisfied with what is said but seek what is meant. Intercultural communication becomes more complex when taking into account the diversity of India and the Spanish-speaking world. Various cultural issues faced by Indian translators and interpreters when translating to and from Spanish are reviewed.


About Simran Maira

Simran Maira is a faculty member in the Department of Spanish Studies at DSEU where she teaches Spanish, translation and interpretation. She is a former faculty member of the Center of Spanish Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University where she taught Spanish language  literature and translation to undergraduate and master’s students for over 25 years.  
She holds an M.Phil degree in Spanish from JNU and has pursued further studies in Spanish at the Complutense University in Madrid and in Curriculum Planning and Instruction at The University of Houston, USA. She has twice been awarded a hispanista fellowship to Spain. 
Simran Maira is also a professional Spanish Interpreter working at the highest level to enable communication across languages and cultures. She has been the interpreter for more than two dozen Presidents, Prime Ministers, Ministers and Governors for their official meetings. 
Additionally she supports foreign language school teachers through workshops on teaching foreign languages. She has been invited to give workshops and has been the judge and chief guest for the literary festivals at various schools like Step by Step, DPS, G.D. Goenka World School, Khaitan and Kothari International Schools. 
Among her many published works are several literary translations of Spanish and Latin American authors.
