Jaume and Mar Vilaseca in India - Across the Land

Jaume and Mar Vilaseca in India - Across the Land Arnab Banerjee

The encounters and farewells of Mar and Jaume Vilaseca go beyond the familial. From a very young age, Mar learned much of what she needed to know about the stage and live music performance close to her  her father and his jazz projects. In a short time, she discovered her own voice, style, and character, which she showcased in numerous performances and her debut album, "Find the way" (2020), where she strongly alludes to her compositions and demonstrates her mastery of her first instrument, her voice. Life in New York, after her time at The Juilliard School, led her to compose more with the guitar, bringing forth new textures, new melodic lines, and new paths for improvisation.

Jaume Vilaseca's compositional trajectory takes us back to 2002 and the release of "Aquí i Allà," a work in which he masterfully blended jazz with Latin and Brazilian rhythms as well as flamenco. This was followed by "World Songs" (2005) and two albums where he explored his musical ideas with the sounds of Indian music, especially the sitar in "Mumbai" (2010) and "Coming Home" (2012). For this, he counted on the wisdom and genius of Ravi Chary, one of the most experienced sitarists in this country, and together, they played with the most incredible melodies and indulged in free improvisations.

The new project of Mar and Jaume aims to build a bridge between their compositions. Writing lyrics to an intriguing melody, improvising over guitar chords, discovering new rhythms, communicating through music. For this purpose, each of them has chosen the musician closest to their language and way of understanding music. Mar chose saxophonist Birsa Chatterjee, and Jaume chose his friend and collaborator Ravi Chary. The four musicians embark on a new journey with the goal of strengthening these original compositions and, through them, recreating a very personal yet contemporary and creative musical universe
