Beautiful Latinate Orchestral Music

This music-sharing session aims to examine and enjoy the music of Latinate composers such as Arturo Marquez, Juventino Rosas, Gabriela Ortiz and Blas Galindo (all Mexico), Alberto Ginastera (Argentina), Mozart Camargo Guarnieri (Brazil), Joaquín Turina (Spain), Antônio Carlos Gomes (Portugal) and others from the Hispanophone and Lusophone geographies. Too often, in western classical music, discourse and presentation is often skewed towards the music of composers from Germany, Italy, France and even England. All the composers featured in the session, bring the sounds of their own cultures and traditions to the craft of western classical composition, to create unique music that reflects the soil it grew on. Some composers lean on native music traditions harder than others; some use their musical DNA to evolve a music aesthetic that enables prolific output. Some develop music that caters to audiences that demand a particular sound. Some answer the musical call of nationalism in varying degrees. Some music was born of a melting pot of immigrant cultures at different points in time. All the music shared in the session is picked for its unique flavour and its place in the Latinate musical continuum. The presentation itself is geared to make even the first time listener comfortable, so that all are excited and encouraged to move on to exploring further on their own, through music banks like Youtube.
