Evolution of life in the Galapagos Islands Islas Galápagos

Instituto Cervantes in collaboration with the Embassy of Ecuador in New Delhi, will present a colloquium on the Galapagos Islands, which have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The event will have the following format:

a. Opening of the event by the Director of the Instituto Cervantes.
b. Screening of the video on the Galapagos Islands.
c. Presentation on the subject of the screening by Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Dr. A.L. Ramanathan
d. Closing remarks by the Ambassador of Ecuador.


The talk focuses on Galápagos Islands that are a unique natural laboratory for studying the evolution of life, it looks into the  evidence of evolution that allows us to understand the relationship between different species and their ancestors. The evolution of life in the Galápagos has been shaped by the islands’ geographic isolation, geological  activity, and the various ecological niches available to species that managed to colonize the islands. How does the  volcanic origins, geological age gradient, and environmental changes have played critical role and offer a living laboratory for studying the processes of evolution

About Dr. A.L. Ramanathan
Dr. AL. Ramanathan is a Professor in School of Environmental Sciences(SES) at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India. He was listed  in top 2% in the field of Environmental Sciences in the world list from 2019 onwards. He has published over 250 research papers, and his research area includes river sciences, groundwater hydrology, mangrove ecosystem biogeochemistry, Arctic, Antarctic and Himalayan aspects. He has supervised 34 PhD, several   MPhil,  Master Dissertation, postdoctoral fellows. He has served as Dean, SES at JNU. He has participated in more than 30 national/international projects. He has been awarded the INSA teachers, Young Scientist Award – DST, Government of India; Young Scientist Award Linnaeus-Palme Fellow, FORMAS Fellow – Sweden; SIDA Fellow – Sweden; CIFIPRA Fellow - France.
