SAMBAAAAAA!! Enjoying the music & history of samba
Nicholas HofflandThis session on Wednesday, November, 2023, familiarises the audience with the music and history of the ever-popular SAMBA – in its avatar as an umbrella term for the multi-variate rhythms of Brazilian music genres that have their origin in Afro-Brazilian Candomblé from the late 19th century Bahian communities. The session traces the development of samba in the 20th century across Rio de Janeiro and its establishment as a key symbol of Brazilian national identity – onward to Portugal, and through jazz to the rest of the world. The session focuses on exponents of samba music rather than dance. These video-lecs have been specifically devised to enable audiences to enter the world of western classical music. They are structured to work with audiences who have grown up listening to Indian film music and popular western music. There is enough depth to engage more knowledgeable members of the audience, but balanced so as not to alienate listeners who are new to the music form. Each video-lec involves as much music as possible, with an engaging narrative thread to hold it together. The video-lecs are conducted by NICHOLAS HOFFLAND, a design and writing resource, business communicator, art curator, music resource and cook. He enjoys sharing golden-age Indian classical music, Western classical music, jazz, classic rock and old-time Hindi film music, with various forums across India.
