Lorca: Musical Theater and the Spirit of Flamenco
In this joint lecture, University of Granada professors María Ángeles López and Oswaldo Lorenzo will discuss the integration of poetry, music, and theatricality in Lorca’s work, which marked a turning point in the renewal of the Spanish theater scene in the 20th century. Lorca’s musical theater combines popular rhythms, traditional songs, and lyrical structures that heighten the dramatic emotion. In this context, the flamenco spirit—a central concept in his aesthetic—emerges powerfully, representing the deep, almost mystical creative force born of pain and authenticity. The lecture includes brief screenings of works such as Bodas de sangre and La casa de Bernarda Alba, in which Lorca transforms music and flamenco into symbolic engines of passion, destiny, and freedom.
