Between Walls
Between Walls is a compilation of twenty portraits taken by Bernardo Aja from 2018 to 2022. These photos were taken in 2018 in different locations within the Philippines such as Cebu, Negros, and Luzon.
Bernardo Aja works mainly with characters out of time and with seemingly insignificant little things. Between Walls' photographs are infused with a wry sense of humor, full of thorough and mysterious details. When looking at the artwork, the viewer perceives a visual journey, the mood and gestures of these characters, enjoying their extravagant ideas.
Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska has said of his photographic portraits that “the characters attract the photographer because they swim against the current and, like salmon, make an unprecedented effort to go up the river and overcome the flood of water that comes over them, ready to annihilate them”.
