Literary Translation Workshop with Luis Castellví

Literary Translation Workshop with Luis Castellví IC Manchester

We are particularly pleased to host Luis Castellví as a guest in this workshop.

Dr Luis Castellví Laukamp is a Senior Lecturer in Spanish Cultural Studies at The University of Manchester. As a translator, he specialises in translating both poetry and prose from English into Spanish. He has translated three poetry books: Fin de fiesta (2021), an anthology of Clive James’s work, and El triunfo de la vida (2022) and Julián y Máddalo (2024), two major poems by Percy Bysshe Shelley. He is currently working on a new translation of Shelley’s Adonais, which will be published in 2026. In terms of prose, he translated a short story collection by Nick Joaquin, La mujer con dos ombligos (2023), which was awarded a literary heritage grant by the National Book Development Board of the Philippines. In autumn 2025, he will publish his translation of La hermana de Soledad, Jose Dalisay’s landmark novel about the Filipino diaspora.

All of these translations have been published by Pre-Textos, one of Spain’s most prestigious publishing houses.

With his moderation, this workshop invites you to translate into English and to reflect and discuss your impressions, options and ideas about two texts taken from Instrucciones para subir una escalera, by Julio Cortázar and Amor de madre, Almudena Grandes.

Participants will receive the texts in advance. During the session, participants' translations will be shared and discussed with the moderator.
