Instituto Cervantes in Manchester and Leeds launch Microhistoria de España. Contada por un británico, in which the Hispanist William Chislett takes a new approach to the history of Spain that aims to put an end to the well-known slogan "Spain is different". William Chislett carries out a socio-political and historical study that begins with the arrival of the Muslims on the peninsula and ends with the most recent events.

William Chislett was a correspondent for The Times in Madrid during the Transition, and between 1978 and 1984, a correspondent for the Financial Times in Mexico City, before returning to Madrid in 1986. Author of twenty books, he has lectured at the universities of Oxford, Princeton, Harvard, Chicago, Georgetown and the London School of Economics. He writes articles for El País and ABC (Spanish media).
