Mi familia: Celebrating the Day of the Dead

Mi familia: Celebrating the Day of the Dead IC Manchester

The Instituto Cervantes Manchester continues its programme to promote children's reading with Mi familia: Celebrating the Day of the Dead, by María Dueñas and Sandra Carmona.

Valentina is 7 years old and she tells us about her favourite celebration: the Day of the Dead. She shares with us what her grandmother taught her about the meaning of this tradition and how her family and community come together to remember and honour their loved ones who have passed away.

Through Valentina, we’ll discover the traditions surrounding the Day of the Dead in Mexico: decorating altars (ofrendas) with flowers and photographs, and preparing the favourite dishes of those who are no longer with us—cooked lovingly by her grandmother.

This bilingual story is a wonderful opportunity for children to learn, through Valentina and her lovely family, how this special day is celebrated with colourful and heartfelt traditions that keep loved ones connected across generations.
