Matria Álvaro Gago

Ramona’s life in a Rias Baixas fishing village is a constant hustle. When she loses her factory job, she desperately scrambles for work, but in doing so finds an unexpected shelter for her hopes and dreams. Having sacrificed her own needs for her daughter’s future, she’s now pushed to look inwards and, maybe, find something new to live for.

Ramona is a wonderfully powerful female lead, inspired by the life of Francisca Iglesias, an unsung heroine who cared for the director’s grandfather during his final years. Originally made as a short film in 2017, Álvaro Gago has expanded Francisca’s story into his debut feature–length work, bringing the working-class experience of his native Galicia into a vibrant on-screen reality.
