Las cinéphilas

Las cinéphilas Martín Lehmann

With this documentary feature, followed by El tiempo perdido (2020) and Las cercanas (2021), María Álvarez began a trilogy about art and its meaning over time. The value of art in giving meaning to people's lives, especially women, makes her work an existentialist tribute to the importance of culture in interpreting history, and vice versa.

Synopsis: This documentary focuses on three retired women, residing in Buenos Aires, Madrid, and Montevideo, respectively. Although separated by a great geographical distance, they all share something in common: their passion for cinema. In front of the camera, they engage in a particularly unique conversation that is quite unusual, and one that we seldom take the time to listen to. It dismantles the stereotypes of the world of culture and film, which have traditionally been associated with a male and youthful circle.
