America: cantes y bailes de ida y vuelta
Nick ChaffeThis second talk will examine how the language of flamenco was shaped by the cultural exchanges between Europe, Africa and the Americas in the colonial era. Using both historical and contemporary examples, we will zoom in on key flamenco styles such as the fandango and the tango, some of which have now become key symbols of Andalusian and Gitano identity, but which also have important relations with Afro-American musical repertoires.
