La buena letra [The Good Manners]

La buena letra [The Good Manners] ESFF

As part of the programme “Voices of Contemporary Cinema”, we present the film *La buena letra*, directed by Celia Rico.

In this adaptation of Rafael Chirbes’ work, the director delves into the emotional memory of post-war Spain, exploring the family tensions, silences and sacrifices that shape the everyday lives of her characters.

Synopsis:

In a Valencian village in the post-war period, Ana tries to get by with her family; the Civil War has left a deep wound in all of them, especially in her brother-in-law, Antonio. Ana attempts to heal that wound with stews, secrets and silences, but when Isabel, newly married to Antonio, joins the family, Ana’s care and attention will count for little or nothing: sacrifice does not always bring reward.

After the screening, director Celia Rico will take part in a discussion chaired by Santiago Fouz Hernández, Professor of Iberian Studies and Film at Durham University.

Programme:

  • 28 April: Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle.
  • 29 April: HOME Cinema, Manchester.
