José Saramago was born into a poor family in Azinhaga, Portugal. He lacked the means to study beyond the fourth grade and only began to write at the age of 60. Yet, he quickly became one of the world’s most beloved Portuguese-language authors and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. Pilar del Rio, José’s beloved wife, has a strong spirit and a firm grasp of José’s active schedule.
