Manchester International Crime and Justice Film Festival 2024: 'La Isla Mínima' Alberto Rodríguez

Instituto Cervantes Manchester is pleased to present, once again, alongside Manchester Metropolitan University, the screening of the film La Isla Mínima, as part of The Manchester International Crime and Justice Film Festival 2024. The selected Spanish film, directed by Alberto Rodríguez and released in 2014, is considered a reference within the genres of film noir, mystery, and thriller..

The story unfolds in Spain, in the early 1980s. Two police officers, ideologically opposed, are sent from Madrid to a remote southern village, located in the marshes of the Guadalquivir River, to investigate the disappearance of two teenage girls. As they delve into the case, they uncover a network of corruption and violence involving local authorities and powerful landowners. The film combines elements of a police thriller with a portrayal of rural Spain at the time, marked by corruption and brutality. In a community anchored in the past, they will have to face not only a cruel murderer but also their own ghosts.

The film will be presented by Professor Karl McLaughlin, translator, interpreter, and lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, at the Instituto Cervantes in Manchester.
