“Disability, Gender and Literature in 15th-Century Castile: Teresa de Cartagena’s Intersectional Self", by Juan Carlos Conde
Juan-Carlos Conde, Professor at the University of Oxford, will present this conference within the Leeds International Medieval Congress 2021, invited by the Instituto Cervantes in Manchester and Leeds. In his lecture, Conde will explore the works of Teresa de Cartagena, a 15th-century Castilian writer, from the theoretical perspective of intersectionality. This exploration highlights the selective activation of various aspects of her identity carried out by the author in her works according to her communicative intention and the reactions to their reception. This reveals the fluidity of the literary representation of the authorial identity detectable in these works.
Juan-Carlos Conde is Professor of Medieval Spanish Literature and Philology at the University of Oxford and Tutorial Fellow in Spanish at6 Magdalen College. He is also 'Beatriz Galindo' Senior Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Spanish and Spanish-American Literature of the University of Salamanca. He is completing a critical edition of the works of Teresa de Cartagena, to be published at the 'Letras Hispánicas' series of Cátedra publishing house.
