Day of the Dead
The Instituto Cervantes in Manchester, in collaboration with Magaly Flores and Colibrí Mexican Folkdance UK, presents a traditional altar specially created to celebrate the Day of the Dead. Visitors are warmly invited to explore this meaningful display honouring loved ones who have passed. Recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, this Mexican tradition brings together families and friends around an altar to honour and remember loved ones who have passed away. Celebrated on 31 October, 1 and 2 November, the Day of the Dead coincides with All Saints’ Day in the Roman Catholic calendar. Customs associated with the celebration include creating private altars known as ofrendas, and paying tribute to the deceased with calaveras (skulls), candles, marigolds, and their favourite food and drink.
