Europe Day: New relations between Spain and the United Kingdom after Brexit

Europe Day: New relations between Spain and the United Kingdom after Brexit PIxabite

Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon specifically allows for a member state to opt out the European Union. This option was voted for by British citizens in a referendum known as Brexit and its consequences reach far beyond relations with the European Union. It also affects every other member state, especially those with strong links with the UK, such as Spain.

Brexit is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable transformations in British constitutional history. In this period of uncertainty around future relations with the United Kingdom, European Union and Spain, there are also key issues to be addressed. Future links between British and Spanish authorities, the legal situation of citizens from both jurisdictions and of Gibraltar all remain under question.

Pablo Antonio Fernández Sánchez, professor of Public International Law at the University of Seville, and Javier García Oliva, lawyer and professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Manchester, will explore these issues on the 30th May at the Instituto Cervantes, Manchester.
