Chinamperos: maintaining ancestral farming practices

Director and photographer Rodrigo Jardón takes us into the world of the chinampas, the lake areas surrounding Mexico City, whose agricultural tradition and survival as a natural zone are threatened by their proximity to one of the largest cities in the world.

Continuing with his observational cinema and his commitment to uncovering human and natural spaces absent from mainstream media, this Mexican visual artist demonstrates his determination for precise documentation in this commissioned film.

Synopsis: The canals of Xochimilco, in the south of Mexico City, are the last remnants of a vast agricultural system based on floating islands known as chinampas, which were key to the construction of the ancient Aztec Empire. By listening to the stories of its inhabitants, we witness how this agricultural technique has endured water scarcity, natural disasters and climate change, passing down its importance from generation to generation and highlighting the role of culture in preserving our environment.
