Asia: a discussion of Isaki Lacuesta’s film 'La leyenda del tiempo'
Nick ChaffeIn this fourth and final lecture we will discuss the remarkable successes of flamenco on the Asian continent. Japan perhaps has become the country in the world that most values flamenco and where it is most intensively studied and practiced outside of Spain. We will trace the historical and cultural origins of this development, while also asking a wider question about the international journeys of flamenco across the globe: how do students and artists who are not from Spain negotiate their own ‘foreignness’? This topic is beautifully dealt with in Isaki Lacuesta’s film La leyenda del tiempo (2006), which we will discuss.
