The Art and Legacy of Santiago Ramón y Cajal
The travelling exhibition on the art and legacy of Santiago Ramón y Cajal arrives in Manchester after its stay at Imperial College London. This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to explore the life and work of Cajal, one of the most influential figures in both science and art of the 20th century.
Santiago Ramón y Cajal, a Spanish doctor and scientist, is internationally recognised for his contributions to the field of neuroscience, particularly for his research into the structure and function of the nervous system. Awarded the Nobel Prize and regarded as the father of modern neuroscience, Cajal was not only distinguished for his remarkable scientific work but also for his humanistic side. His scientific drawings of neuronal anatomy are world-renowned, but his talent extended far beyond science, encompassing photography and painting, fields in which he left an indelible mark.
The exhibition’s opening will take place on Friday 25th April from 1:00 PM, and will feature an inaugural event with researchers Dr. Cristina Nombela Otero and Dr. Alberto Jiménez Schuhmacher, focusing on Cajal's role as a mentor and the relevance of women in his school, a key aspect of his legacy that has been fundamental in the development of neuroscience.
