Pablo Zapico, baroque guitar
Join us for the exciting new concert in the Guitarrísimo series, presented by the Instituto Cervantes Manchester, the National Centre for Early Music, the Consulate of Spain in Manchester and the Society of Ibero-American and Latin American Music. Enjoy an incredible performance by Pablo Zapico with his programme featuring baroque guitar music based on composers such as Ludovico Roncalli, Santiago de Murcia and Francisco Guerau, among others. The baroque guitar was actually known as the Spanish guitar throughout Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. An instrument originally from Spain that became enormously popular with the invention of the strumming technique. So the current mainstream name for the classical guitar as Spanish guitar comes from this instrument. The programme presents an amazing journey through the main Spanish and Italian guitarists who brought fame and prestige to this guitar. Popular works are mixed in an ambiguous way with those that are more academic and refined. Spanish authors such as Gaspar Sanz, Santiago de Murcia or Francisco Guerau are combined with illustrious Italians such as Francesco Corbetta, Angelo M. Bartolotti or Ludovico Roncalli. Musicians who were as important at the time as guitarrists such as Andrés Segovia or Paco de Lucía in the 20th century. Pablo Zapico is a reference in historically informed performance. Specialised in baroque guitar, archlute and theorbo. He completed his studies at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya and his master's degree at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Together with his brothers, Aarón Zapico and Daniel Zapico, he is co-founder of the prestigious baroque ensemble Forma Antiqva, recognized by critics as one of the most highly rated on the current scene. Independently and with a professional career that spans over more than 20 years, he continues to be incredibly active as a soloist and collaborator with the most important European groups and orchestras, participating in all Spanish festivals, performing concerts all around the world and recording more than 40 albums. He also gives master classes and basso continuo courses to students from all over the world, consolidating himself as an expert in the field.
