50 Years of Democracy in Spain

50 Years of Democracy in Spain ESFF

Spain commemorates the 50th anniversary of the reestablishment of Democracy after the death of Franco in 1975 and the subsequent social and political Transition. This historic milestone marked the beginning of a new contemporary democratic system. Fifty years on, it is time to reflect on the lessons learnt.

In 2025, democracy around the world faces persistent challenges and new threats, including growing inequalities, political polarisation, disinformation, and attempts to undermine a free press. All the rights gained—once thought to be secured—are now at risk.

This roundtable will be a dialogue that invites us to look back and reflect on where we come from and where we are headed, guided by Professor Nuria Capdevila-Argüelles and Professor Oliver Escobar.
