Africa: musical border-crossing and the contested origins of flamenco

Africa: musical border-crossing and the contested origins of flamenco Nick Chaffe

This first lecture in the series will introduce the audience to debates about the contested origins of flamenco, by looking at its multiple connections with the African continent. We will discuss the musical and cultural influences from Africa that reached the Iberian Peninsula in the times of Al-Andalus and that have left crucial imprints on flamenco. Finally, we will address flamenco’s often-overlooked relations with Blackness.
