The Captive

The Captive Alejandro Amenábar

U.S. premiere of the latest feature film by Alejandro Amenábar. Blending myth, history, and fiction, director Alejandro Amenábar (The Others; The Sea Inside, PSIFF 2005) offers a bold interpretation of Miguel de Cervantes during his five years as a captive in 16th-century Algiers.

Synopsis:

While Don Quixote has inspired countless film adaptations, far fewer have focused on its creator, Miguel de Cervantes. In The Captive, director Alejandro Amenábar (The Others; The Sea Inside, PSIFF 2005) crafts a bold and imaginative portrait of the writer, blending myth, history, and fiction. After being taken prisoner and failing to secure the ransom for his release, Cervantes alleviates his imprisonment by telling stories to engage his fellow inmates and forge a special bond with his brutal captor, all while planning a daring escape. Amenábar’s interpretation of the illustrious figure is a vivid and personal ode to the creation of stories, and the liberating power of fiction.
