Territories of Hispanism
The concept of
academic or cultural Hispanism has evolved alongside the development of the
diverse cultural realities and humanistic disciplines that form its specific
content. The growing awareness that there is a common root linking together the
disciplines and practices that we can now unreservedly regard as characteristic
of Hispanism justifies the Cervantes Institute in Los Angeles’ decision, for
the second consecutive year, the ‘Territories of Hispanism’ series to bring
together, in a shared spirit and under a single title, academic, artistic and
even civic initiatives that bear witness to and develop that specific form of
humanism we call Hispanism. Events such as the
Festival Cervantino in San Diego, the series ‘Memoria del exilio filológico
español en California’, or the forthcoming meetings of the North American
Academy of the Spanish Language on the West Coast are examples of the wealth of
content that this series will develop throughout 2026. We are convinced
that series such as this contribute effectively to a better collective
understanding of the cultural diversity and depth that both the historical
traces of the past and the present-day life of Spanish-speaking communities
bring to civic life and the creative potential of California and the United
States.
