Vowels

Vowels Esther Gatón

Instituto Cervantes in London is collaborating in the promotion of the exhibition Vowels by artist Esther Gatón. In this exhibition, Esther Gatón delves into the generative power of intimacy, exploring how personal experiences intertwine with the social narratives that shape them.

Her work draws momentum from small domestic events that endure as silent archaeologies of the everyday — a sticker placed on a child’s piece of furniture and never removed; a mark on the wall from the day we bumped into it. The works presented in Vowels depart from Gatón’s usual practice — often articulated through sculpture, audiovisual installations, and text — and return primarily to drawing. It is an exercise carried out in the stillness of a room, and from there she begins to construct kinds of spaces that take shape through the images she imbues them with and the objects she creates. Excerpt from a text by Rafael Barber Cortell, 2025

Esther Gatón (born in Valladolid, 1988) is an artist living between London and Madrid. Gatón creates exhibitions that interweave sound, light, materials, and architecture, treating the gallery space as a living membrane. She recently completed the WIELS residency in Brussels (2022), followed by institutional solo exhibitions at the CA2M Museum in Madrid (2023, curated by Cory John Scozzari) and at Affiliate WIELS, Brussels (2025, curated by Piero Bisello). Her third major institutional solo exhibition will open next year at the Museo Patio Herreriano in Spain, curated by Rafael Barber Cortell. Educated at Saint-Luc Liège, the University of Barcelona, and Goldsmiths London, she also holds a PhD (Cum Laude) from the Complutense University of Madrid. Her writings have been published in Materiales Concretos, Nero, ADesk and Urbanomic.
