Spanish in Motion: Seven Sisters Indoor Market

Spanish in Motion: Seven Sisters Indoor Market London School of Economics

The Instituto Cervantes in London starts a collaboration with the Centre of languages from the London School of Economics.

Our first activity will be the screening of The Seven Sister Indoor Market by Klearjos Papanicolaou and Marios Kleftakis (95’, 2016, English and Spanish with English subtitles), followed by a Q&A on the issues raised by the film with the filmmakers.

The Seven Sisters Indoor Market (also known as El Mercado de Pueblito Paisa) is a feature-length documentary depicting contemporary London in the midst of a major transformation. Using hybrid film language that borrows from documentary and fiction styles, as well as ethnographic modes of representation, we follow a group of migrant traders from Latin America, Africa and elsewhere.

The sounds of salsa and reggae emanating from this market in Tottenham, north London, are juxtaposed with those of drills and metal clanging heard throughout the city outside.

The Seven Sisters Indoor Market film opens the door to a culturally rich community that is part of the London landscape. However, today this community is threatened by the process of the so-called regeneration and it is at risk of disappearance.
