Romería

Marina travels to Vigo to meet the family of her biological father, who died of AIDS—just like her mother—when she was very young. Through encounters with her uncles, aunts, and grandparents, she tries to piece together a narrative about her parents. However, the family is burdened by shame over the couple’s struggles with drug addiction, something Marina’s presence brings back to the surface. It is through a teenage love story with her cousin that Marina begins to reimagine her parents and connect with them. Drawing from her mother’s diary, she creates a tale that frees her from the stigma her family holds and fulfills her desire to understand the past. A film about family memory, Romería concludes the director’s trilogy, which also includes Summer 1993 and Alcarràs.
