Instituto Cervantes in London is collaborating with the V&A East Storehouse in celebrating Spain's National Day by organising a programme of cultural events centred around the wooden ceiling of the Palacio de Torrijos: from a day of talks, workshops and pop-up performances to a classical music concert.
The V&A East Storehouse wants to activate the ceiling as a point of connection between the past and the present, and between different communities, especially the Spanish and Latin American populations of East London.
The Torrijos ceiling is one of five large-scale objects that will be unveiled to the public. Through the lens of the “Torrijos ceiling”, we want to explore the multicultural stories hidden in this exceptional 15th-century Spanish ceiling, now part of the V&A collection, and the dynamic cultural exchanges that shaped it.
Artist Inés Cardó, who specialises in performance and visual arts, will present her performance "Preparing for Other Worlds" that speaks to memory, cultural identity and alternative worlds, transforming the museum's hall into a reflective and immersive space.
