The films of Bigas Luna

The films of Bigas Luna Instituto Cervantes

Instituto Cervantes London is hosting the launch of The Films of Bigas Luna, the new book by Santiago Fouz Hernández and the first monograph in English to offer a comprehensive study of the Catalan filmmaker’s complete body of work—from Tatuaje (1976) to DiDi Hollywood (2010).

Drawing on a methodology that combines archival research, detailed film analysis, and theoretical frameworks such as haptic cinema, eroticism, authorship, and Mediterranean and Iberian identities, the book revisits the themes that define Bigas Luna’s creative universe: the body, desire, gender, cultural identity, and the interplay between reality and artifice.

On this occasion, Fouz Hernández will be in conversation with Betty Bigas, artist and daughter of the filmmaker, to explore both the personal dimension and the artistic legacy of one of the most distinctive figures in contemporary Spanish cinema. Together, they will delve into processes, previously unseen materials, and production anecdotes—elements that form part of the extensive research behind the book—while also reflecting on the relevance of Bigas Luna’s work in today’s cultural landscape. It will be a unique event inviting audiences to rediscover his cinema from fresh perspectives, connecting memory, theory, and creation.

The conversation will be moderated by Joana Granero, director and founder of the Spanish Film Festival.
