Making a SPLAS for UCL200 - Past, present and future Instituto Cervantes

Instituto Cervantes London is collaborating with UCL University as part of its bicentenary celebrations, through a programme of events that takes stock of its history, highlights the international excellence of its teaching and research, and reflects on the future of Modern Languages and Area Studies.

The first Chair of Hispanic Studies in the United Kingdom was established at UCL and was held between 1828 and 1830 by the liberal exile Antonio Alcalá Galiano, a friend of Jeremy Bentham and a defender of the anti-absolutist Constitution of Cádiz of 1812.

The event will include:
The screening of a documentary on Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at UCL;
A round-table discussion on contemporary narrative with the novelist Marta Pérez Carbonell and her translator, UCL alumna Rosalind Harvey; Presentations by members of staff and students celebrating our past, present and future, as well as reflecting on the challenges currently facing our discipline.
