Guitarrísimo: Fernando Espí commemorates Antonio de Torres' second centenary
The Guitarrísimo series pays homage on this occasion to the creator of the modern guitar, Antonio de Torres (1817-1892), in the second centenary of his birth. The recognised guitarist Fernando Espí will play a selection of pieces in honour of the luthier from Almería.
Antonio de Torres has gone down in history of music for having set a new conception of the guitar model, known today as concert guitar or Spanish classic guitar. Besides of having constructed for the most important soloists of the end of XIX century and the beginning of XX (Arcas, Tárrega, José Martínez Toboso, Antonio Cano, Miguel Llobet, Emilio Pujol, etc.), his innovations were adapted by the majority of constructers from all over the world: from the school of Madrid (Manuel y José Ramírez, Santos Hernández, Domingo Esteso, Enrique García, Modesto Borreguero, etc.), to the French (Robert Bouchet), the German (Hermann Hauser) and the American schools (Albert Augustine).
Fernando Espí is a graduate in History and Science of Music, and specialise in ancient music with plucked string instruments. Espí is considered “one of the best Spanish classic guitarists”, according to ‘Ritmo’ magazine. His work has been widely recognised with awards such as the Extraordinary Graduation Prize “José Tomás”, in the Superior Conservatory Óscar Esplá of Alicante, where he practises as Guitar Professor. He has also been awarded in the Musical Youths of Spain Contest, the International Guitar Competition “Francisco Tárrega” of Benicasim, or the International Guitar Contest “José Tomás” of Petrer. His musical career has taken him to traverse Spain and more than 30 European, American, Asian and African countries, where he has collaborated with organizations such as the World Young Choir of UNESCO or the Cervantes Institute.
