Two Lands, One Passion: Spain , the UK and Fútbol LaLiga

LaLiga UK and the Instituto Cervantes London present a conversation with Sid Lowe and Gaizka Mendieta, followed by Q & A. British columnist and journalist Sid Lowe and Spanish former midfielder Gaizka Mendieta will discuss on previous football and culture experiences and ties between the UK and Spain. They will chat about switching countries, arrival in the United Kingdom, learning the language, football culture, similarities and differences between LaLiga, Premier League and their fans. Gaizka Mendieta, born in the Basque Country and raised in Castellón, Gaizka started his career at CD Tonin and later moved to CD Castellon. He played 17 games with the "Castelloneses" where he caught the eye of Valencia CF, who quickly moved to sign him as one of their own. During his time at Valencia, Mendieta won the Copa Del Rey and the Supercopa de España. In 2001, he was signed by SS Lazio and later returned to LaLiga on loan to shine with FC Barcelona. After a year at the Camp Nou, he finished playing in the English Premier League and hung up his boots for good in 2008. Among others, Gaizka has played two Champions League finals and represented the Spanish national team both internationally and in the Olympics. Sid Lowe, born in London and based in Madrid, studied History and Spanish at the University of Sheffield, spending a year in Oviedo for the Spanish language part of his degree. There, he became a fan of the local club Real Oviedo. He later took a master's degree in History, followed by a PhD in 20th-century Spanish history. Sid is an international columnist and journalist, covering Spanish football for many publications, websites, radio and football-related podcasts across the world.
