This month, the Library Corner is commemorating half a century of democracy in Spain, a historic process that has shaped the country’s political, social and cultural identity. Under the title “From dictatorship to democracy: 50 years of freedom”, we present a selection of books that tackle the shift from the Francoist regime to a pluralist and modern democratic system, from different perspectives.
The collection includes testimonies, historical essays, novels and studies that allow us to understand the challenges, tensions and hopes that accompanied this process. From the first resistance movements, the death of Franco in 1975, the approval of the constitution in 1978, up until other landmark events that have consolidated Spanish democracy. This display invites you to reflect on the importance of freedom, historic memory and the role of citizenship in the construction of a common future.
You can find amongst the selected titles:
· La Transición. Historia y relatos de Santos Juliá
· Anatomía de un instante de Javier Cercas
· España: de la dictadura a la democracia de Paul Preston
· La Constitución explicada a jóvenes de María Fabra
· Obras literarias que retratan la época, como Los girasoles ciegos de Alberto Méndez
This selection was created for readers of all ages, who may know lots or little, with the objective of encouraging dialogue, critical reflection and understanding of a key period in Spain’s contemporary history.
