Instituto Cervantes in London, in collaboration with Professor Jorge Diez-Cintas, is organising a course on film subtitling, which will be held from Tuesday 14 to Friday 17 October. 


Jorge Diez-Cintas is Professor of Translation Studies and founding director (2013-2016) of the Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS) at University College London. He has written numerous articles, special issues and books on audiovisual translation, including Subtitling: Concepts and Practices (with Aline Remael, 2021). A pioneer in audiovisual translation, he has trained future translators on six continents and is a regular speaker at international conferences and events. He has also provided consulting services to the European Parliament, the European Commission, OOONA, Deluxe, and Netflix, among others. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Peter Lang's New Trends in Translation Studies series and has received the Jan Ivarsson Award (ESIST, 2014) and the Xènia Martínez Award (ATRAE, 2015) for his invaluable services in the field of audiovisual translation. 

Course dates and content: 

Tuesday 14 October: Introduction to subtitling: space-time protocols. 

Wednesday 15 October: Localisation of subtitles and orthotypographical criteria. Cloud-based subtitling platforms. 

Thursday 16 October: Subtitling into English: informal register and cultural references.

Friday 17 October: Subtitling into Spanish: sensitive language
