Criaturita by María Bastarós

Criaturita by María Bastarós Instituto Cervantes

Join us for an evening of reflection, mystery, and conversation as we dive into Criaturita, the acclaimed novel by Spanish author María Bastarós. Set around the eerie Lake Milagro, the story follows Kaila, a 19-year-old haunted by the disappearance of her father, a biologist obsessed with an elusive deep-sea creature. As women begin to vanish from nearby towns, myth and reality intertwine in a haunting exploration of identity, absence, and womanhood. A coming-of-age tale infused with psychological tension and subtle fantasy, Criaturita invites us to question what lies beneath the surface in the lake, in our families, and within ourselves. To get the most out of this activity, we recommend reading the book in Spanish. Please note that the book club takes place in this language.
