The virtual film club Cita con el cine closes its 2025 programme with one of the masterpieces of classic Spanish cinema, El verdugo, directed by the award-winning director Luis García Berlanga.
In this black comedy from 1963, Berlanga challenges Franco's society with his typical irony, criticising situations of the time in a humorous way.
Synopsis
José Luis is a young employee in a funeral parlour who, while serving a prison sentence, meets an executioner called Amadeo, who is about to retire. When he brings him home the briefcase with the professional instruments he had forgotten, he also meets his daughter Carmen, whom nobody has wanted to marry because she is not related to her father. The couple quickly hit it off and, after being caught by the old man in a compromising situation with his daughter, José Luis is forced to marry her. [Source: Catalogue of Berlanga, la risa amarga].
