Book launch of Last Evenings with Teresa
IC
Cervantes Institute in London presents the English translation of Juan Marsé's book "Last Afternoons with Teresa".
To mark the occasion, translator Nicholas Caistor will be interviewed by translator and writer Gala Sicart.
Synopsis of the novel: A milestone in contemporary Spanish literature in a new edition. El Pijoaparte, the protagonist of this novel, is one of those rare and fortunate fictional characters who have become part of the collective imagination and common language, as a masterful representation of a type of lower-class, marginalised person who possesses the appeal of youth, cheekiness and the aspiration to realise a dream of social prestige embodied in Teresa, the beautiful blonde girl, student and daughter of the bourgeoisie. The love story between the girl from a good family and the young charnego will bring together a whole world of thugs and bourgeois, maids and progressive daddy's boys that make up this novel, which is at once romantic and sarcastic, harsh and idealistic, awarded the Biblioteca Breve Prize in 1965 and now published with the author's latest corrections.
