Spanish poet Juan José Téllez and Mestisa band in acoustic. Yorkshire 'Poetas' Labour Day special. Laura Díaz

To celebrate May 1st, Labour Day, we have prepared a special session of ‘Poetas de Yorkshire’. On this occasion we will be accompanied by the well-known Spanish journalist and poet Juan José Téllez, whose work is termed by critics as part of the current Poetry of Experience. In addition, the Andean music group Mestisa will offer us a short acoustic performance.

The special guest on this occasion will be the acclaimed journalist and writer Juan José Téllez. Juan José Téllez (Spain, 1958) was director of the newspaper ‘Europa Sur' and currently works as an independent journalist for several types of media: as a collaborator in various gatherings, maintaining a biweekly column on eldiario.es and as the director of the "Bienvenidos" programmes and "A pulso". In addition, he continues his literary career as a poet, narrator and essayist.

Juan José Téllez will cover a selection of passages from current Spanish literature, especially his poetry, which reflects the impact of the contemporary economic and political crisis, with special attention to the world of work and that of marginality, coinciding with the worker's commemoration of May 1st. From Isaac Rosa to Sara Mesa, in the field of narrative, from Juan Carlos Mestre to Isabel Pérez Montalbán, in the field of poetry and far from the dogmatic postulates of socialist realism, today's Spanish writers propose a transversal view of the sectors more disadvantaged by the severe depression suffered from 2008 onwards.

'Poetas de Yorkshire’ is a free event, open to the participation of anyone who wants. The poems of Juan José Téllez will be translated into English.
