Misa Criolla
The Instituto Cervantes in Leeds, the School of Music at the University of Leeds and the Iberian and Latin American Music Society present Ariel Ramírez’s iconic Misa Criolla. At the heart of the evening is Ramírez’s emblematic Misa Criolla. Blending the text of the Catholic Mass with the vibrant folk traditions of the Andes, the work infuses the sacred liturgy with a festive, irresistible pulse that stirs both body and soul. The performance will feature Argentine tenor Jonatan Alvarado, a full student choir, and traditional South American instruments. Spanish soprano Lorena Paz Nieto will also join Jonatan Alvarado in a selection of dazzling arias and duets from celebrated zarzuelas, the much‑loved Spanish lyric tradition renowned for its wit and virtuosity. Leading the concert is Ignacio Pilone, Head of Performing Arts at the Universidad Católica del Uruguay. A world‑renowned specialist in opera and Latin American repertoire, Pilone brings exceptional stylistic authenticity and energy to the podium.
